Congratulations, Edward Waters University!
The Jacksonville Historical Society was pleased to learn this month that Edward Waters College, Florida’s first historically Black college, is now Edward Waters University. Founded in 1866 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church to educate freedmen and their children, the institution has seen many changes in its 155 years.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’ve decided to dig into our Florida Times-Union photo collection and take a trip back in time. We hope you enjoy this mid-century look at Edward Waters College.
