City to Commemorate Bicentennial in 2022

Jacksonville Historical Society launches task force

A city only gets one chance to celebrate its bicentennial. In less than a year the citizens of Jacksonville/Duval County will have that chance as many organizations make plans to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the city named for the state’s military governor of the Florida Territory, Andrew Jackson.

The Jacksonville Historical Society, in partnership with about two dozen organizations focused in Arts & Culture, Business & Industry, Education, Environment, Faith, Government, Health & Wellness, Media, Nonprofit, and Sports & Entertainment, is planning to kick off the Jacksonville Bicentennial Commemoration in January 2022 with programs and events leading up to a Bicentennial Celebration next June 15, 2022.

“Each task force member, and indeed every organization in Jacksonville, is being encouraged to brand their 2022 events with the bicentennial mark, indicating support of this important milestone,” said Alan J. Bliss, Chief Executive Officer for the Jacksonville Historical Society. “If you are already planning an event for 2022, now is the time to co-brand your theme with the Jacksonville Bicentennial logo.”

Currently, the bicentennial’s major sponsors include the City of Jacksonville, Haskell, Marks Gray P.A., and Wingard Creative, who designed the Jacksonville Bicentennial mark, and the bicentennial website Jax200.org.

The Jax200 bicentennial mark – or logo – evokes the essence of Florida’s sunny skies and blue waters and of Jacksonville’s many bridges which unite citizens on either side of the St. Johns River.

Several of the task force members, among them First Coast YMCA, the Museum of Science & History, Duval County Public Schools in partnership with the Jacksonville Library, and 904WARD, are already planning programs and events, all of which will be available soon on Jax200.org.

In recognition of the city’s milestone, the Jacksonville Historical Society has added an introductory membership level – the Bicentennial – for $20.22 for adults 30 and under. The membership is open through Dec. 31, 2022. For more information on membership levels, click here.
